最近無料動画でシャーロックホームズ（ジェレミー・ブレット演ずるところのドラマのほうで、いやもちろん、じき公開の映画で賞を取ったとかのロバートダウニーJrだってアリーmy loveの頃から嫌いじゃないですが）を流し始めたので、もう数え切れないほど何回も見ているけれど、また寝る前についつい見てしまうわけです。でもって、いま「青い紅玉」を見ていたわけですね。いわずとしれた小ぶりのタマゴ大ぐらいの青色の宝石がお金持ちの家から盗まれてしまったという話なんですが。で、ドラマの中で、ホームズ氏が宝石ってのも因果なもので、こんなにきれいなのに殺人のタネになっちゃうんだから恐ろしいもんだねと語る、というようなあたりで、でてくるわけです。「When the commissionaire had gone, Holmes took up the stone and held it against the light. "It's a bonny thing," said he. "Just see how it glints and sparkles. Of course it is a nucleus and focus of crime. Every good stone is. They are the devil's pet baits. In the larger and older jewels every facet may stand for a bloody deed. This stone is not yet twenty years old. Who would think that so pretty a toy would be a purveyor to the gallows and the prison? 」というわけです。もちろんこんな長い文章が聞き取れるわけもないので、Wikisourceからコピったわけですが、宝石を指して「so pretty a toy」。いやあ、こういう使い方するわけですね。（超低レベル語で喜んでて、すいませんが、、）こないだからbeautiful、pretty あたりの言葉が気になっていたせいか、そのpretty って言葉だけ、ドラマの台詞の中で妙に際立って聞こえたわけです。何度も聞きなおして挙句に原典まであたるという入れ込みよう。まあそれなりに自覚はあるけど、いったん気になりだすと、やたらと尾をひくんですな、これが。
それにしても、ほぼオリジナルの言葉遣いに忠実にドラマ化してるってことで、さすが、コナンドイル卿って愛されてるんですねえ。
