My favorite author and blogger Prof. Tatsuru Uchida, wrote that Raymond Chandler and Claude Lévi-Strauss have something in common in the way of writing. According to prof. Uchida, Haruki Murakami wrote 'The Long Goodbye' afterword as a translator,
'What kind of things does Chandler intend to write with his best eloquence? In short, it is the world viewed through the eyes of Philip Marlowe as a narrator. The scene is looked so accurately, told so eloquently into very details, but seems not processed. Philip Marlowe would comment on many of the scenes, would take action. However, we look his comments and attitudes do not reflect his real sense of self..'
Prof. Uchida wrote he would not be surprised if someone replace Philip Marlowe as Claude Lévi-Strauss and say, this is the comment for "Tristes Tropiques". May be this is not major way of reading, but it would be good for readers who has a chance to compare both authors.
I took that advice worth following. In addition, realized that I happen to have "The Long good bye" translated by Murakami in my bookshelf. I' m about to turn the first page.
